Marco Pais Da Trindade and I attended the Western Australian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects’ Density Done Well | Exhibition Opening + DI Provocation event on Monday, 6 October.

The evening was divided into two main parts:

  1. The Exhibition: showcasing a broad range of architecturally designed housing projects, including Hillam’s own dual-award-winning Montreal Commons.
  2. The Talks: featuring three compelling presentations exploring the social, sustainability-focused and civic value of density done well.

Hillam Project Director Gregory Ewart (very engagingly!) opened the session, sharing insights into the process, client perspectives, challenges, and positive outcomes of Montreal Commons.

The second speaker, Jonathan Lake from Gresley Abas Architects, presented on a recent development, highlighting the impact of community-led design in supporting residents transitioning from homelessness into stable housing and community life.

Jimmy Thompson from MJA Studio concluded with three projects of varying scales: the Subiaco Townhouses (small), Victoria House (medium), and Forbes Apartments (large); each illustrating the importance of civic generosity and thoughtful consideration for neighbours at every scale.

Greg closed with an inspiring reference to John F. Kennedy’s words:

We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.

The collective vision, expertise, and commitment shared throughout the evening encouraged all of us to continue advocating for civic generosity .. and to channel our skills toward ambitious yet achievable built outcomes.
