Hillam sponsors Complex Buildings Studio Prizes

Hillam Architects recently hosted presentations from two winners of the Hillam Architects’ sponsored prizes for the Complex Buildings Studio at Curtin University, lectured by our own Alex Jones.

This is the first year Hillam has offered prizes to architectural students based on their final presentations for the unit, which were initially delivered on October 31 to an audience of students and industry professionals.

Each of these students presented unique interpretations for an adaptive reuse of the Elders Woolstores site in Fremantle, Western Australia, currently being developed by H-U, which acquired the historic site in 2022.

Three prizes were awarded by Hillam – a 100-hours paid internship for Jordan Casey, a $1000 prize for Samarah Siddique and $500 for Lucas Tan.

Jordan and Lucas were available to present to the Hillam Studio in November, giving them further presentation experience and an opportunity to receive their awards directly from David Hillam.

Jordan’s concept focused on broad-ranging sustainability philosophies including circular economy principles, with a design that featured rooftop gardens, hydroponics and research facilities supporting and working with a micro-brewery and hospitality offerings, alongside public amenity and various housing opportunities.

Lucas’ design called for an ambitious engineering of the heritage façade, using natural light to transform the relationship between the exterior and the historic/cultural uses of the interior currently hidden from the public realm – including the long-established but informal use of the site by skateboarders and graffiti artists

Hillam Architects is proud to support the design theory and skill of these students in their path toward being the architects of tomorrow.
