Montreal Commons wins at 2025 Architecture Awards

It was a fantastic night for Hillam Architects at the 2025 WA Chapter Architecture Awards, with Montreal Commons in Fremantle earning awards in the ‘Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing’ and ‘Sustainable Architecture’ categories.

Principal and Founder David Hillam was quick to applaud the dedication of his team, former colleagues Sean van der Poel and Mitchell Kahl, and especially our clients, OP Properties.

“I really appreciate their passion and commitment to the project. That is absolutely the reason we received these awards,” David said.

“As architects, we always strive for the best design, social and environmental outcomes, but without the developer’s full support projects on this scale wouldn’t be possible.”

Hillam Architects thanks the Australian Institute of Architecture, the judges and all other nominees and winners for their contribution to architecture.

AWARD FOR RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE – MULTIPLE HOUSING

From the Jury:
“Montreal Commons, located in Fremantle’s East Village, offers a thoughtful model for responsible urban living. Through efficient planning, the project embraces natural ventilation, privacy, and communal spaces.

The development fosters social interaction and environmental sustainability, offering a desirable medium density building that is anchored in its context.”

AWARD FOR SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE

From the Jury:
“Montreal Commons demonstrates an outstanding holistic approach to sustainable urban living, which has a low environmental impact from construction materials, operational energy, water usage, transport, and waste.

It also fosters health and happiness in its residents and surroundings through increased neighbour interaction and connecting the human spirit to the larger environment of the sky, seasonal changes and urban ecology.”
