Capturing views on three different levels

This uncompromisingly modern home on a corner lot in South Perth capitalises on the site’s northern aspect offering views to the river and the city beyond.

The steeply-sloping site was challenging, but it ultimately provided an opportunity for our design to be stepped over three levels. The lower level houses an undercroft garage allowing the upper living areas to engage with the street. The entry void soars above, enabling glimpses through and a discrete invitation to the spaces beyond.

The main living and entertainment areas are on the first floor and open onto a large terrace which functions as an outdoor living room.

Expansive glazing on the northern facade is not only floods the house with natural light, it also provides views of the river through the tree canopy to the west. A central light-filled gallery defines the entrance and helps separate the home’s two distinct private and public levels.

The interior is enriched by the natural beauty of travertine, recycled timbers and marble which are used throughout key areas to create a depth of textural finishes which contrast with the simplicity of the resolved modern design.

Efficient cross ventilation using automated window awnings provides a high level of thermal comfort and gives the residents every opportunity to take advantage of the outdoor lifestyle.
