This expansive family home overlooks the Indian Ocean in the northern beachside suburb of Mullaloo.
The site, which adjoins coastal vegetation and sand dunes, has fantastic ocean views. The goal was to develop an innovative architectural solution which would capitalise on these and respond to the natural environment. Our client was also very clear about their living requirements and we worked closely with them to determine an appropriate hierarchy of spaces.
Our final design saw the main living space and bedrooms allocated the premium locations in the house with the utilitarian areas arranged next to service courts on the south-east of the site.
The house follows a linear configuration along the site’s southern boundary to maximise the northern exposure of the living spaces and the pool to facilitate entertaining.
The interior living spaces and the western balcony are seamlessly linked for true indoor-outdoor living and to allow the sounds and smells of the ocean to permeate the house.
To counter the potentially harsh marine environment, we used appropriate materials and created both exposed and protected outdoor living areas to provide flexible living arrangements depending on the weather.
