A modernist-era beachcomber

This family residence in City Beach is the result of a close collaboration with the clients throughout the design and construction phases. The house is deliberately low-rise in scale and blends modernist-era influences with a refined coastal palette. The brief was to orientate the home to best capture ocean views while remaining sympathetic to surrounding properties.

The design makes use of the sloping topography to diminish the presence of a sunken garage whilst the split-level entry and pool deck connect with the streetscape. The site is exposed to strong prevailing winds and has a substantial slope towards the rear boundary. Taking this into account, the cabana and landscaped pool deck were positioned on the protected northern side of the house to offer sheltered outdoor living.

The external palette is simple and stark; but inside, integrated cabinetry and reclaimed timber flooring provides warmth and complexity. A discrete master-suite is complemented by an intimately-scaled living space which acts as a backdrop for the client’s collection of mid-century European furniture and vintage textiles. In keeping with our design philosophy, this residence incorporates a number of sustainability measures.
