In response to the location, architect David Hillam designed the Kammann’s new home with a sharp linear form to highlight the ruggedness of the surrounding landscape.
“This use of contrast works both ways, ” says David. “Your eye is also drawn to the home’s clean, pragmatic design and the generous dimensions of the building. It is designed to act as a foil to the spectacular windswept setting.”
This contrast is heightened by the sweeping skillion roof that pitches upward to the north. The roof’s ‘wing’ form is partly representative of sails on a yacht while also enabling the architect to produce an uninterrupted roofline with expansive eaves.
“The design was strongly influenced by the panoramic outlook. The angled roof produced an internal space that opens up to the views so that the sky, not just the ocean, could be clearly seen,” David says.
